Study Background

In this study, we want to accomplish two things. First, we want to test the impact of cannabis abstinence on memory, attention, processing speed, language, and executive function in adults who are 25-55 years old. Second, we want to explore how cannabis abstinence affects psychiatric disorder symptoms.

To do this, we’re working with twins. Before the study, both twins will be already using cannabis weekly. During the study, one twin will quit for 6 weeks, and the other twin will not be asked to make any changes. Then we’ll ask both twins to complete thinking abilities tasks. The entire study can be done remotely over video chat.

Your participation in this study may help researchers learn more about the cognitive effects of cannabis use. Further research today and join our compensated study!

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the effect of abstinence from cannabis for 6 weeks on cognitive function and mental health symptoms.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Key Criteria:

  • Have a twin
  • Are between 25-55 years old
  • Agree that it is ok if your twin knows you use cannabis
  • Use cannabis at least weekly, including the past 2 weeks
  • Willing to stop for 6 weeks
  • No traumatic brain injury that your twin hasn’t also had
  • Are fluent in English

There are two groups for this study. One group will receive payment, or a treatment method called contingency management, to stop using cannabis for 6 weeks. Those in the contingency management group will get paid to stop using cannabis for 6 weeks. We will only monitor those in the other group, or control group, for 6 weeks and they will not be asked to make any changes to their cannabis use. If you are in this group, you can continue to use cannabis or stop using cannabis.

There are 8 visits over 6 weeks and in total requires about 6 hours of your time. All visits are completed over video chat. We will ask questions about your history of substance use and health, and you will also complete thinking abilities tasks. In addition, we will mail you drug tests to complete at the start of each visit. We will ask you to collect a urine sample (privately) once we are on video chat and bring the sample back to the computer. We will ask you to perform the drug test on the urine while following directions from the staff member. Each visit lasts from 15 minutes to 1 ½ hours.

Participants in the abstinence group can earn up $760, while participants in the control group can earn up to $235.

There is no cost for you to participate in this study.
