Study Background
Researchers at McLean Hospital are conducting a research study to investigate how neurofeedback training, a way of teaching the brain to create new patterns of electrical activity, can be used to treat depression.
Findings from this clinical research study will help determine the efficacy of Prism Neurofeedback training, which uses real-time displays of brain activity to train you on how to control activity in specific regions of your brain

Clinical Evaluation (3-3.5 hours over Zoom): a virtual visit where you will meet with our clinician for an interview, mental health history and surveys to give you more information about the study and assess eligibility.
MRI Session (5 hours at McLean Hospital): this session involves a urine drug screen (and pregnancy test, if applicable), a 1.5 hour MRI scan, brief interviews with our clinicians, online surveys, computer games, and your first practice of the neurofeedback training.
Neurofeedback Sessions (45 minutes-1 hour): the neurofeedback training sessions will happen twice a week, on nonconsecutive days, for about 5-8 weeks. Each session should take about 45 min – 1 hour. During the neurofeedback training you will be fitted with an EEG cap. In addition to the neurofeedback training you will do a brief check in with our clinicians about your symptoms and complete some surveys at a few of the sessions.
Second MRI Scan (5 hours at McLean Hospital): on the day of your last Neurofeedback training, you will complete a second MRI scan day. If we are unable to schedule this scan for the same day, then no more than a week after you complete your Neurofeedback trainings you will be brought in for a second MRI scan where you repeat the same tasks that completed during the first scan.
Booster sessions: one and two months after your last neurofeedback session you will experience a booster session of neurofeedback, complete surveys, and check in with the clinician about your symptoms.
3-Month Follow-up: this visit will be done via Zoom and will take place 3 months after your final neurofeedback training and will consist of doing brief interviews with the clinician, completing surveys, and being debriefed about study procedures.
