Study Background

We are conducting an observational research study on the impact of medical cannabis and/or hemp-based products on conventional medication use, pain, cognitive function, and various brain measures in older adults.

This is a study of adults between the ages of 50-75 with chronic pain conditions (which are currently being treated with opioids) who are interested in using medical cannabis and/or hemp-based products or who intend to continue their current treatment regimen.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the impact of medical cannabis use on pain, conventional medication use, clinical state, and cognitive function in older adults who take opioids for chronic pain.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Key Criteria:

  • 50-75 years old
  • Have a chronic pain condition treated with opioids
  • Not using opioids recreationally
  • Able to provide informed consent
  • Fluent in English
  • Not currently undergoing chemotherapy or end-of-life-hospice care

You’ll meet with our research team to complete 4 study visits over the duration of 1 year. Study visits can be completed remotely or in-person depending on preference. There will also be monthly check-in phone calls.

During the visits you will complete:

  • a clinical interview
  • questionnaires
  • cognitive testing
  • may include cheek swab for DNA analysis
  • may include MRI scan

 

Participants interested in using medical cannabis or hemp products will source their own products for this study; the investigator will not provide products.

Compensation is provided up to $500 for in-person participants or $375 for remote participants.

There is no cost for you to participate in the study.
