Score of 8+ on the overall anxiety severity and impairment scale
Ages 18+

conducted in Boston, MA
Study Background
Researchers at Boston University are investigating how sufferers of anxiety related disorders respond to cognitive behavioral therapy.
Participants will complete questionnaires related to CO2 reactivity, followed by a biomarker assessment. Participants will then attend 12 weekly one-hour sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as weekly 5-10 minute Independent Evaluation calls. At the end of this 12-week personalized treatment, participants will be asked to complete clinical measures to determine their improvement. This will be measured again at a 3-month follow-up visit.
Your participation in this clinical research study may help increase our understanding of the nature and causes of anxiety-related problems, as well as develop more effective treatments. Further research today and join our compensated study!

- No lifetime history of bipolar or psychotic disorders, substance abuse or dependence (other than nicotine) or eating disorder in the past 6 months; organic brain syndrome, mental retardation or other potentially interfering cognitive dysfunction
- No suicidal behaviors within the past 6 months
- No medical conditions contraindicating CO2 inhalation or VH (e.g., cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac failure, asthma, lung fibrosis, high blood pressure, epilepsy, or stroke
- No pregnancy or lactation
- No ongoing psychotherapy directed toward the primary disorder
- No pharmacological treatment started within 8 weeks prior to the screen (patients “stable” on their medication regimen will be included and their medication status will be included as a variable in the model)
Once enrolled, this study involves:
- Answering questionnaires related to CO2 reactivity
- Completing a biomarker assessment (less than 1 hour)
- Breathing challenge: taking in repeated breaths and rating anxiety and physical reactions
- Attending 12 weekly one-hour sessions of cognitive behavior therapy, as well as weekly 5-10 minute Independent Evaluation calls
- Completing a battery of clinical measures after the 12-week treatment to determine your improvement (approximately 1 hour)
- Attending a 3-month follow-up visit
- Repeating clinical measures to determine the durability of your therapy improvement
Compensation is provided up to $300 for your participation.
- $70 for the biomarker assessment session
- $30 for the baseline assessment
- $10 for each weekly assessment ($120)
- $30 for post treatment and follow-up ($60)
- A reward of $20 for completing all assessments
