Study Background
Researchers at the University of Missouri are examining how Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for sleep problems affects sleep and other health outcomes among people who drink alcohol.
Findings from this clinical research study will help us understand if and how drinking influences sleep — and how to tailor treatment for this population.
Adults who drink and have trouble sleeping will complete assessments at baseline, mid-treatment, post-treatment, and 1, 3, and 6 months after the end of treatment.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Key Criteria:
- Ages 18-49
- Weekly drinking
- Experience trouble sleeping at night
- No mania or seizure disorder
- No rotating shift work
- Not in treatment for alcohol use disorder
- Not in behavioral treatment for insomnia
Once enrolled, this study involves 3 phases:
- The baseline lasts approximately 2 weeks. First, we will ask you to complete a confidential online survey (30-45 minutes) to confirm your eligibility. Then, we will ask you to complete a Zoom interview to figure out what (if any) sleep disorders you might have. Next, we will send you a link to two online computer games (20 minutes). If you meet all study criteria, we will ask you to complete “sleep diaries” (5 minute daily surveys) and wear a Fitbit (which we provide) every day for 2 weeks.
- Treatment lasts approximately 5 weeks. If you are eligible and interested, we will randomly assign you to one of two research groups. One group meets individually with their sleep coach to complete Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for sleep problems (once a week for five weeks). The other group receives the same treatment at the end of the research study (in 6 months).
- Follow-ups occur immediately at the end of treatment and 1, 3, and 6 months after the end of treatment. At each follow-up, we will ask you to complete online surveys and wear your Fitbit again for 2 weeks.
The entire study lasts 8-9 months.
Compensation is provided up to $435 for your participation.
