Study Background

Researchers at RAND and the University of Southern California are conducting a study to investigate behavioral health in veterans.

This is a study of veterans’ behavioral health symptoms and healthcare access. In particular, we are interested in understanding how direct and indirect experiences of discrimination, racism, sexism, military sexual trauma or other experiences of sexual violence might affect behavioral health symptoms (like depression, post-traumatic stress, and alcohol use) and receipt of behavioral health care.

If you participate in this study, you will be asked to complete two online surveys each year, lasting between 30 to 45 minutes each. These surveys will be conducted every 6 months for a total of 4 years.

The study is open to all veterans who have separated/discharged from military service from the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Navy. We particularly want to recruit veterans from racial/ethnic minority groups and African American veterans.

Additional Information

The purpose of this study is to examine how experiences of discrimination and violence impact behavioral health and access to care among veterans, including symptoms like depression, PTSD, and alcohol use. We welcome participation from veterans across all branches of the military and particularly encourage participation from women veterans and those from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds.

  • Addressing Increasing Diversity: The study is being conducted to understand and address the unique behavioral health needs of the increasingly diverse veteran population, particularly racial/ethnic minorities and women, who are underrepresented in research.
  • Overcoming Barriers to Care:The research seeks to uncover and address the barriers that prevent these veterans from accessing and utilizing behavioral health services, such as discrimination, longer wait times, lack of knowledge about benefits, and mistrust of providers.
  • Informing Policy and Intervention: By providing a comprehensive analysis of the factors contributing to behavioral health disparities, the study aims to inform targeted outreach, interventions, and policy efforts to improve behavioral health outcomes for racial/ethnic minority and women veterans.

Participants may qualify for this study if they meet the following criteria.

 Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older

If you participate in this study, you will be asked to complete two short surveys each year, lasting between 30 to 45 minutes each. The surveys will be conducted for a total of 4 years. Your responses will be confidential.

These surveys will be conducted online and can be completed using your phone, tablet, or computer with internet access.

The surveys will cover various topics, including your demographics (like your sex, gender, branch of service, rank, marital status, education, and income), your thoughts about alcohol use, your own use of alcohol and other drugs like cannabis, your mental health symptoms, your experiences with mental health treatment, any gender or sexual harassment you may have experienced, any discrimination based on factors like race, sex, or gender, and any exposure to violence such as combat experience, community violence, or violence at home.

Your participation in this study will help researchers better understand the experiences of veterans and how they relate to behavioral health and access to care.

Compensation is provided up to $355 in gift cards for your participation.
