Study Background
Brown University School of Public Health is conducting a study with individuals with overweight or obesity who smoke.
This research study aims to evaluate the health impacts effects of switching to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).
Individuals who are overweight who smoke cigarettes have greatly increased risks to their health. Switching to e-cigarettes may reduce these risks.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 21+
- Smokes cigarettes
- Overweight
- Does not use e-cigarettes regularly
- Not currently quitting smoking or planning to quit soon
Study visits will include the following:
Study Orientation: Participants will complete an online orientation session via Zoom, in which they learn about the study goals, study timeline and format, as well as their role as participants. They will also discuss with other participants and the session leader the pros and cons of joining and not joining the study.
Baseline Assessments: There are two Baseline assessments. Each one lasts around 1.5 hours via Zoom. For the first, participants meet with a study staff member and provide informed consent, discuss their typical use of substances, and complete questionnaires. If participants are still deemed eligible after the first baseline assessment, they are shipped a package of materials including: 1) a scale, 2) a carbon monoxide (CO) monitor, 3) a blood pressure cuff, and 4) a pregnancy test (if applicable). During the second assessment, study staff will instruct participants on how to complete each physical measurement (weight, height, blood pressure, exhaled CO, waist circumference, pregnancy test). They will also meet with a senior staff member and a Nurse Practitioner to review physical and mental health history.
Information Session: Participants will meet with a senior staff member via Zoom to receive information on the risks of electronic cigarettes and cigarettes. They will then learn the conditions to which they are assigned and be provided more information on their responsibilities within their study conditions.
Contingency Management (CM) Sessions: Participants will join two short Zoom sessions daily, and use a device to provide a breath sample in front of study staff. Staff members will verify the sample and inform them of their earned incentives for that session based on their condition. These sessions take around 10 minutes a day to complete and are completed for 28 days.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
Eligible participants will be compensated up to $424 for their time.
