Frailty and Nutrition Research Study

Researchers at New York University are evaluating the effects of a program that aims to improve the strength and function of swallowing muscles in older adults.

Study Background

Eating and drinking are vital to health and quality of life.

Unfortunately, the swallowing muscles are prone to decreased strength and function as part of the natural aging process. Many older adults experience issues with swallowing which can impact health and quality-of-life. This can lead to difficulty swallowing, malnutrition, and frailty.

Exercise and nutrition are powerful stimulators of muscular change. The purpose of this study is to learn more about how exercise and protein supply affect swallowing muscles.

Researchers will investigate the effectiveness of a proactive regimen of swallowing exercises and nutrition/hydration support to improve the composition, force, and physiology of the swallowing muscles. This study will explore the relationship of strengthening the swallowing muscles to overall health and physical function in older adults.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 65+
  • Participants must qualify as ‘pre-frail’ or ‘frail’

Exclusion Criteria:

  • No existing structural or neurological condition causing a swallowing disorder (head and neck cancer, stroke, Parkinson’s, etc.)

This research study consists of 3 visits in total, each scheduled 12 weeks apart. The total study duration is 6 months.

During assessment visits, participants will have an MRI, a swallowing x-ray, and a swallowing pressure test and complete various surveys and questionnaires. Participants are compensated $199 per visit, and transportation can be arranged.

Between the second and third assessment visits, participants will participate in 2x per week swallowing exercises (24 sessions total). Sessions last approximately 30 minutes and can be conducted in person or via Telehealth. Participants will either consume water or protein drinks during their exercise sessions.

Compensation is provided up to $597 for your participation.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
