Study Background

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are studying how social experiences affect depression in LGBTQ+ high school students.

This study focuses on LGBTQ+ high school students and how social experiences, such as relationships with peers and parents, relate to depression. Researchers aim to understand how these experiences affect the brain’s reward and motivation systems and how they contribute to depression during adolescence.

The findings may help improve understanding of depression in sexual minority youth and guide ways to support their mental health and well-being.

Additional Information

In this research study, we are examining how depression develops in LGBTQ+ high school students. We are particularly interested in how social experiences, like relationships with peers and parents, relate to brain systems involved in reward, motivation, and positive emotions. We will measure these brain systems, along with participants’ experiences and behaviors, to better understand how they may contribute to depression during adolescence.
