Many people with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) also struggle with alcohol use, and current treatments do not work for everyone. This study compares two therapies to determine which is more effective for treating both PTSD and alcohol use disorder and how care can be improved.

Additional Information

This study is being conducted to better understand posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder and to explore ways to improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for individuals experiencing both conditions. It will compare two types of therapy to determine which approach is most effective for reducing PTSD symptoms and alcohol use.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Aged 18–70 years
  • Experiencing PTSD symptoms
  • Reported heavy drinking in the past month

 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Current psychotic disorder or bipolar disorder
  • Suicidal or homicidal ideation
  • Currently enrolled in evidence-based behavioral treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) or PTSD

Overall Duration:
This study lasts about 14 months in total. Participants will complete a baseline assessment, 12 therapy sessions over 6 weeks, and follow-up assessments at 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment.

In-Lab Activities:

  • One baseline assessment visit (about 3 hours)
  • Participants complete interviews and questionnaires about PTSD symptoms, alcohol use, and mental health
  • 12 therapy sessions over 6 weeks (about 105 minutes each)
  • Each session includes a short check-in with the research team followed by about 90 minutes of talk therapy with a trained clinician
  • All therapy sessions are audio-recorded for research purposes
  • Participants may complete alcohol-related tests (such as breathalyzer or blood alcohol tests) during study visits
  • Additional interviews and questionnaires may be completed throughout the study

 

At-Home Activities:

  • Daily smartphone app surveys during the 6-week treatment period
  • Surveys take about 5 minutes per day
  • Questions focus on alcohol use and mood
  • Data is used to track daily changes in symptoms and behavior
  • All responses are kept confidential and used only for research purposes

Participants may receive up to $560 for their participation.
