Additional Information

The purpose of these studies is to gain insights into the effects of going without nicotine products for one day as well as to understand patterns of vaping behavior and how those patterns relate to things like dependence and exposure to nicotine.

You may qualify for these studies if you meet the following criteria:

Key Criteria:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Smoking or vaping nicotine daily or almost daily
  • Able to attend 3-4 visits at UB South Campus

Our studies include:

  • Phone screen (15-20 minutes)
  • An initial visit (up to 1.5 hours): study overview; consent; assess use of a variety of products over the past 7 days; urine sample for pregnancy test (if applicable), drug, and nicotine exposure; questionnaires; and other activities.
  • 1-2 lab visits (up to 4 hours each): includes some of the same things as the initial visit plus a chill period of at least one hour where you will get access to things like XBox with a game pass, Netflix, and snacks that we provide.  These visits may also include computer tasks and a choice activity OR having a small vaping monitoring device attached to your vape to record vaping behavior in the lab and for 8 days in the real world.
  • Follow-up visit (for one study only; 1 hour): you provide breath and urine samples; we collect vaping monitoring device data and get your feedback about the device.

The VASP study offers compensation of up to $385, while the FRIENDS study provides compensation up to $345 for participation.

There is no cost to you to participate in either study.
