This study is investigating how smartphone technology and wearable devices can help researchers better understand changes in depression symptoms over time. By tracking mood, sleep, physical activity, and daily routines, researchers hope to improve future tools for monitoring mental health outside of traditional clinic visits.

Adults experiencing symptoms of depression 

Living in the United States

Currently hospitalized for a mental health condition

What happens if you participate?

You’ll complete 3 study visits over approximately 8 weeks.

Your first visit lasts about 90 minutes and includes:

  • Completing baseline questionnaires
  • Receiving a wearable activity tracker
  • Training on downloading and using the study smartphone app

Throughout the study, you’ll:

  • Wear the activity tracker each day
  • Complete brief daily mood check-ins through the app
  • Complete weekly mental health and quality-of-life questionnaires
  • Have the option to submit brief voice recordings through the app

At your final online session, you’ll:

  • Return the wearable activity tracker
  • Complete follow-up questionnaires
  • Participate in a brief online interview about your study experience
