Study Background

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University are seeking to understand the  the FDA-approved medication, suvorexant for sleep on the effects of commonly use drugs. 

During this study, you will complete an eligibility screening at Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore Maryland. If you eligible based on that screening, you will admit yourself to our inpatient research unit for a 14-16 day period.

During the study, we will maintain you on the opioid drug hydromorphone throughout your stay to help prevent opioid withdrawal. You will also complete five study sessions where the effect of commonly used drugs on behavior and mood is evaluated.

Additional Information

To evaluate the impact of an FDA-approved medication for sleep on the effects of commonly used drugs.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age 18 to 65 years old
  • Not seeking treatment for substance use
  • Current non-medical/recreational opioid use
  • Current opioid use disorder

Once enrolled in this study, participants can expect:

  • One Screening visit that lasts 3-4 hours (in person)
  • One 14-16 day residential stay where you will be asked to stay in a hospital room at Bayview Medical Center (in person)

Compensation is provided up to $2730 for your participation. 

  • Screening ($30)
  • Residential Stay ($75/day + $75/day if completor)
  • Demand Task (up to $300)

There is no cost for you to participate in this study. Transportation options available for the inpatient stay.
