Additional Information

To determine whether cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be helpful for children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to discontinue their medication without relapse over 24 weeks.

Your child may qualify for this study if the following criteria are met:

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Youth ages 7-17

  • Child experiences OCD symptoms

  • Child is taking a medication for OCD

  • Parent and child live in Texas

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Parent and/or child does not speak English

There are two parts to this study.

Part 1: Your child will receive CBT for 12 to 18 weeks and continue taking their medication.

Following the completion of Phase I, your child will complete an assessment to determine eligibility for Phase II.

Part 2: At the beginning of Part II, your child will be randomly assigned, like a flip of a coin, to one of two groups:

  • Continued antidepressant medication (no changes to medication)
  • Discontinuation of their medication (during which they will slowly titrate off of their medication)

Your child will continue to receive CBT throughout this phase. All CBT sessions and medication visits will be done virtually and are free of charge.

Additional procedures:

Throughout the study, your child will meet with one of our study psychiatrists for medication management.

In addition to treatment, you and your child will participate in 4 assessments throughout the study. This includes the initial baseline visit, an assessment after Phase I, an assessment after Phase II, and a 12-month follow-up.

There is no cost for you to enroll in this study. If you choose to enroll your child to our research study, they will partake in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
