Study Background
Researchers at University of California Davis are evaluating how babies learn about their social world and how parents can foster the development of critical social skills.
This study is all about how babies learn to socialize and how parents can help them. We’re going to look closely at how babies start picking up important social skills and figuring out how to interact with people around them.
We’re also interested in how much of a role parents play in this process and what they can do to support their child’s social growth right from the beginning. This research isn’t just about understanding how babies develop socially; it’s also about finding ways to help kids who struggle with social situations.
Ultimately, we hope this study will give us a better grasp of how babies learn to socialize and give parents the tools they need to help their children build strong social relationships.

At each laboratory visit (4 and 12 months), you and your baby will participate in the following activities that are all designed to maximize the comfort of you and baby:
- During each laboratory visit at 4 and 12 months, your baby will undergo EEG (electroencephalogram) testing, where a soft cap with sensors is placed on their head to record brain activity while you interact with them. We’ll also record their eye movements with a camera.
- You and your baby will engage in interactive activities, including playing simple games and showing them pictures and toys. These activities are designed to maximize comfort and familiarity.
- The final visit at 24 months will be a virtual Zoom call, where we’ll show your baby pictures and videos. Additionally, mothers will complete computer surveys about various aspects of health, cognition, and family background before each visit, at their convenience
