Autism Research Studies

Researchers at the Kids with Neurogenetic and Developmental Disabilities (KiNDD) Laboratory at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles are conducting studies to learn more about language and social development in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Study Background

We want to examine how language develops in children with autism using non-invasive brain activity measurements.

The studies in our lab investigate language development and biomarkers in autism spectrum disorder. We use neurophysiological measures such as electroencephalography (EEG) and eye-tracking, which are non-invasive techniques for measuring brain activity and attention. We also perform cognitive and behavioral assessments, which involve working through puzzles and questions with our clinician and completing a play-based activity with your child.

Our lab in Koreatown, Los Angeles has multiple studies researching autism spectrum disorder. Depending on your child’s age and language level, they may be eligible for different studies. Join our study with your child today!

Additional Information

Our studies are being done to learn more about language and social development in autism spectrum disorder. The goal is to develop assessment tools and identify biomarkers that will aid in the advancement of autism research.

Your child may qualify for the study if they meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 5-11 years old
  • Diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder
  • Parent or guardian speaks English

First, study staff will contact you to complete a screening call and further explain the study. If your child is eligible, you and your child may be asked to come to 1 or 2 study visits. The study visits take place in person in our dedicated research space at 3250 Wilshire Blvd, Suite 1710, Los Angeles, CA 90010.

Participants will come in and complete cognitive/developmental assessments with a clinician. They will also complete an EEG and/or eye-tracking session lasting about 30 minutes. EEG recordings involve wearing a stretchy cap, which has small sponges on it that are soaked in warm water, and watching some videos. Eye tracking sessions require your child to wear a small target sticker on the center of their forehead while they watch various videos on a screen.

We work with participants to best accommodate them and have a positive research experience. We have snacks and toys available for participants to take breaks between activities.

You will receive $50 for your participation.

There is no cost for your child to participate in our research study.
