Study Background

Researchers at Northwestern University are conducting a study to learn about the role of familial context in shaping adolescent development.

Through this work, we aim to understand how family and cultural values influence children’s academic, social, emotional, and brain development in adolescence. In particular, we will examine the role that parents play in shaping their children’s beliefs and behavior, as well as the underlying neural processes associated with these developmental changes.

Ultimately, we hope to use the results of this study to identify cultural beliefs and parenting practices that contribute to children’s successful navigation of the early adolescent years.

  • Parent participant should be one of the child’s primary caregivers (mother or father)
  • Only one parent/child dyad per family

In this remote study, parents and children will each independently fill out an online survey 4 times over the course of 3 years, with each survey being completed 12 months apart. Participants will receive the links to the surveys via email, and each survey should take approximately 50 minutes to complete. The expected time commitment is about 3 hours and 30 minutes for each parent and child over the course of the 3 years.

For each pair of parent/child surveys completed, participants will receive $40 via Amazon e-gift card ($20 per individual parent or child survey). Participants can earn up to $160 for completing all 4 sets of surveys across the 3 years.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
