Study Background
In this study, we want to better understand how sleep quality may influence cognition and brain function in adults ages 65-85 who have trouble sleeping at night. This study involves 4 in-person visits over the course of 2 months to Western Psychiatric Hospital on the University of Pittsburgh campus. Participants will also be asked to complete at-home activities.

Additional Information
The goal of this study is to better understand how sleep quality may influence cognition and brain function in adults ages 65-85 who have sleep troubles.
You may qualify if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 65-85 years old
- Difficulties staying asleep at night
- Able to undergo an MRI
- Currently taking psychiatric medications
- Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, any other psychotic disorder
- Currently diagnosed with depression or panic disorder
- History of electroconvulsive therapy
- Drug or alcohol dependence within the past 6 months (Note: Drug testing is not involved in our study)
- History of stroke, brain cancer, seizure disorder, epilepsy, a severe head or brain injury, fractured skull, or loss of consciousness greater than 24 hours
- Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s disease, or any other neurodegenerative disease
This study will last approximately 2 months, and will consist of 4 in-person visits and several at-home activities. The in-person visits are as follows:
- Screening Visit
- PET Scan Visit, which includes a 20-30 min PET scan and a neuropsychological assessment
- Overnight Visit 1, which includes cognitive tasks, questionnaires, polysomnography, blood draw, and an MRI brain scan. Breakfast will also be included.
- Overnight Visit 2, which includes cognitive tasks, questionnaires, polysomnography, blood draw, and an MRI brain scan. Breakfast will also be included.
At home activities will involve:
- Wearing an ActiGraph watch (similar to a pedometer)
- One-night sleep apnea screening
- Sleep diary
- Following a specific sleep schedule for a 4-week period.
As a participant, you can receive up to $599 for completing all study activities. Transportation can also be provided.
