Study Background

The Medical University of South Carolina is conducting the H.E.A.R. 4 Mamas (Healing, Equality, Advocacy, and Respect for Mamas) study.

Researchers at MUSC are hoping to learn if a program for new moms can reduce discrimination in maternal care and improve the detection of early warning signs of potential complications after delivery.

The program texts new moms questions about their health and needs and connects them to an Obstetric Nurse Advocate who can help women get appropriate medical care quickly and easily throughout the postpartum year, as well as connect women to any needed resources (food, diapers, transportation, housing).

Women who enroll will be assigned to one of two groups: usual care OR usual care PLUS the HEAR 4 Mamas program (text/phone-based screening and connection to an Obstetric Nurse Advocate).

All participants will be asked to complete a survey at the time of enrollment and 3 times during the postpartum year. All surveys can be completed via cell phone or email. Participants will be paid for their time completing surveys.
