CRC Screening Research Study for American Indians

Researchers at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center are evaluating ways to improve colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates among American Indians.

Study Background

Accelerating Colorectal Cancer Screening and follow-up through Implementation Science (ACCSIS)

The Accelerating Colorectal Cancer Screening and follow-up through Implementation Science (ACCSIS) Program is aimed at addressing inequality in rates of colorectal cancer screening among American Indians in Oklahoma.

Together with Tribal Nations, Area Indian Health Boards, and Indian Health Service (IHS) healthcare facilities, our researchers are studying the development of a communication intervention delivered through several different channels. The goal of this intervention will be to improve CRC screening rates for this population.

Participants in this brief remote research study will be randomly assigned to one of two online interventions and then complete a survey afterward. Join today and help us work towards improving the health of American Indians in Oklahoma!

Additional Information

Doctors recommend that adults begin screening for colorectal cancer around age 45. Regular screenings increase the chances of catching cancer early when it is easier to treat. However, the rates of CRC screenings for American Indians in Oklahoma are much lower than the general population. With this research study, we are working towards developing a communication intervention to help improve the rates of CRC screenings among American Indians.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 45-75 years old
  • Identify as American Indian or have a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB)
  • Live in Oklahoma
  • Speak English
  • No prostate cancer screening (e.g., colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, FIT) in the past 2 years

Your participation is completely virtual. If interested and eligible, you will fill out a consent form online, engage with an online intervention (a brief video or interaction), and complete surveys before and after the intervention.

Participants will be compensated $20 for their time and effort.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
