Depression Research Study

Researchers are seeking participants for a research study investigating the relationship between omega-3 fatty acids and depression treatments.

Fast Facts

Ages 18+

Currently Depressed and Taking an Antidepressant Medication

Compensation Provided

Conducted in Salt Lake City, Boston, and Atlanta

Study Background

We are conducting a study to improve treatment for individuals with treatment-resistant depression whose current medication is not working.

Although there are many ways to treat depression, current forms of treatment are not effective for some people. We are investigating whether an increase in dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as omega-3 fatty acid, may help treat depression.

Throughout the course of this study, we hope to determine if changes in immune system activity are related to changes in symptoms of depression. Participants will not need to stop taking their current medications.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to determine if omega-3 fatty acids modify markers of inflammation in certain patients with treatment resistant depression.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18+
  • Currently depressed
  • Currently taking an antidepressant medication and not responding
  • Not using illegal drugs
  • Overweight (25 < BMI ≤ 40)
  • No bipolar disorder diagnosis
  • If female, not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • No problems with consuming fish oil

Participation in this research study involves 8 in-person visits and 1 phone call visit over the course of approximately 17 weeks. During this study, participants will not need to stop taking their current medications. The first visit is a screening visit that will include a blood draw, urine drug screen, and psychiatric evaluation.

This is an augmentation study, and you will not have to stop taking your current antidepressant medication. Participants will be randomly assigned into 2 groups, one of which will receive an omega-3 fatty acid supplement, and the other will receive a placebo. Additionally, participants will take blood tests to measure immune system activity.

Compensation for time and inconvenience may be provided.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
