Study Background

Researchers at Be Well Texas at UT Health San Antonio are testing the Kios app, which is designed as an add-on to buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder.

Kios is a new app that aims to help people taking buprenorphine. We want to test the Kios app to see if it is useful in helping people stick to their treatment plans

As part of the study, participants will use the Kios app several times per week for 13 weeks. During this, they will have biweekly Zoom calls with the study team to complete interviews and surveys, as well as at-home drug testing.

Additional Information

Buprenorphine is a common treatment for opioid use disorder, but in order for it to be effective it is important that patients adhere to their treatment plan. Interventions like the Kios app can help ensure patients remain in their buprenorphine treatment, leading to better overall outcomes.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18+
  • Diagnosed with opioid use disorder (OUD)
  • Started OUD treatment recently
  • Not using methadone as treatment for OUD
  • Own a phone or tablet

This study will include 27 virtual visits over a period of about 13 weeks. Over the course of the 13 weeks, participants will be asked to use the Kios app at least three times per week. They will also complete the bi-weekly virtual study visits, which will last around 15-30 minutes and involve completing interviews, surveys, and at-home drug tests which will be mailed to participants’ homes.

Participants will receive $10 per visit, for a total of up to $270 across the 27 visits.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
