Remote Anorexia Nervosa Treatment Study
Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University are studying how two different types of treatment, delivered remotely over 24 weeks, support eating disorder recovery after intensive treatment.
Fast Facts
In or recently discharged from intensive treatment for symptoms of anorexia nervosa
18+ Years Old
Compensation Provided
Conducted Remotely in the US
Study Background
Help us learn more about two different remotely-delivered behavioral interventions following intensive treatment.
Eligible participants will be randomized to receive one of two behavioral interventions designed to bolster recovery following intensive treatment. Each intervention consists of 24 individual, weekly, hour-long sessions conducted online with a mental health practitioner. Participants will remotely complete assessments and have blind weight measured throughout and after intervention sessions to monitor satisfaction and progress, including in two additional visits that each take about 3 hours.

Additional Information
The purpose of this research study is to compare two different kinds of remotely-delivered treatment to see how well they support eating disorder recovery following intensive treatment. One treatment is designed to enhance the ability to experience positive emotions and experiences outside of eating disorder symptoms. The other treatment is designed to directly alter eating- and weight-related patterns that may make you vulnerable to disordered eating.
You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 18+
- In or recently discharged from intensive treatment (e.g., residential, IOP, PHP, or inpatient) for symptoms of anorexia nervosa (e.g., restrictive eating, weight loss, fear of gaining weight)
- Not currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant
All study procedures will be conducted virtually. Participants will have initial screening visits, 24 weekly remotely-delivered individual treatment sessions, a mid-treatment visit, a post-treatment visit, and one follow-up visit three months later.
Over the course of the study, participants will be asked to do the following things:
- Complete assessments about symptoms, thoughts, and behaviors
- Complete a remote medical screening that includes providing information about medical and medication history, height, and vitals
- Have blind weight measured at each assessment point and weekly throughout treatment
- Remotely participate in 24 weekly, 50-minute treatment sessions
- Fill out pre- and post-session questionnaires to evaluate symptoms and feedback about the treatment
- Complete computer-based tasks online
- Complete real-time mobile phone surveys for 1 week on 2 separate occasions
As a participant, you can receive up to $500 for completing the study, plus potential bonuses.
- Baseline: Up to $180
- Mid-treatment: $40
- End of treatment: Up to $200
- Follow-up: $80
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
