Childhood Psoriasis Research Study

Researchers at UC San Diego are conducting a study to understand the usability of digital health technologies in children diagnosed with psoriasis.

Study Background

UC San Diego is seeking parents of children diagnosed with psoriasis to test devices used to monitor vital signs.

This study aims to understand the usability of digital health technologies (DHTs) in monitoring vital signs and movement in children, with a focus on those with childhood psoriasis.

Participants will wear devices to measure heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen levels, skin temperature, and movement, both in the lab and at home over a six-day period. Children will engage in specific activities, such as walking and simulated scratching, to assess the devices’ performance.

Parents and children will receive training on how to use the devices and will have daily contact with study staff for support. Both parents and children will complete surveys and interviews to share their experiences with the devices. Participants will be compensated for their time and effort during the study.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the accuracy and usability of digital health technologies (DHTs) for monitoring vital signs and movement in pediatric populations, particularly focusing on children with psoriasis.

You may qualify for the study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Parent of a child ages of 6-12
  • Child has been diagnosed with psoriasis
  • Willing to travel to the UC San Diego campus for at least 1 visit
  • Willing to wear 3 devices for up to seven days at home
  • No known illnesses in the past 14 days
  • No known metabolic, respiratory, or cardiovascular disease
  • Fluent in English

The study involves two lab visits over seven days. The first visit (Day 1) will take place in person at the EPARC Lab at UC San Diego, where children will participate in various activities of daily living, like reading, playing with age-appropriate toys, walking, and more, to assess the performance of wearable devices. Parents and children will be trained in using the devices for at-home monitoring from Days 2-6. The second visit (Day 7) can be completed either in person or remotely and will involve returning the devices, completing surveys, and participating in interviews to gather feedback on the devices.

Participants, both parents and children, will be compensated for participating. Total compensation per family (including travel) is $165.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
