Remote Cognitive Training Research Study

Researchers at the University of Minnesota are conducting a study with healthy volunteers to better understand how individuals with psychosis process information, and how that information travels through the brain.

Fast Facts

No Personal or Family History of a Psychotic, Bipolar, or Autism Spectrum Disorder

Ages 18-30

Study Background

The Remote State Representation in Early Psychosis (remSTEP) study investigates two different brain training exercises.

The purpose of this research study is to better understand how individuals with psychosis process information, and how that information travels through the brain.

Over the course of this study, we will be investigating and comparing two different brain training exercises. Participants will have the same chance of being assigned to either program and will be asked to complete two initial study visits, the cognitive training, and two follow-up visits.

We hope the findings from this study will help researchers develop and improve future cognitive training programs to help individuals with psychosis.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to better understand how individuals with psychosis process information, and how that information travels through the brain.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18-30
  • No diagnosis of a psychotic, bipolar, or autism spectrum disorder
  • Do not have a close family member (parent, child, or sibling) with a psychotic, bipolar, or autism spectrum disorder

Participation in this study involves 5 parts, all of which can be completed virtually.

  1. Intake Visit: During this visit, you will be asked questions about your current and past physical health, including any current or past mental health symptoms.
  2. Baseline Visit: During this visit, you will be asked to complete computerized tasks to evaluate your thinking and problem-solving skills, information processing, and perception.
  3. Cognitive Training: Over the course of 2-3 weeks, you will be asked to complete approximately 10 hours of training (about 30 minutes per day). These will be completed on your computer.
  4. Post-Training Visit: During this visit, you will be asked to answer the same questions and complete the same tasks from the beginning of the study.
  5. Follow-Up Visit: 5 months later, you will be asked to repeat all questions and tasks from the Post-Training Visit.

Eligible participants will be compensated! The compensation breakdown is as follows:

  • Intake Visit: $25
  • Baseline Visit: $40
  • Cognitive Training: up to $200
  • Post-Training Visit: $65
  • Follow-Up Visit: $65
  • Total: up to $395

You can also earn up to $90 in bonuses for completing computerized tasks.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
