Postmenopausal Women Research Study

Researchers at the University of California, Davis are studying how Chardonnay Marc (which is the skin and seeds leftover from Chardonnay wine production) consumption impacts gut and cardiovascular health in postmenopausal women.

Study Background

Researchers at the University of California, Davis are examining how daily consumption of Chardonnay Marc impacts postmenopausal women’s health.

Chardonnay Marc is the skin and seeds left over from the grapes used for Chardonnay wine production. Like many other berries, wine grapes contain flavanols, bioactives which are known to improve blood lipids, vascular response (blood flow), and gut health. We want to test whether regular intake of Chardonnay Marc can both improve gut health and cardiovascular health in postmenopausal women.

Participants in our study will consume Chardonnay Marc every day for a 12-week period. Over the course of the study, we will collect blood, urine, and stool samples as well as measure participant blood pressure and vascular function.

Additional Information

Through this research, we aim to assess the impact of Chardonnay Marc (which is the skin and seeds leftover from Chardonnay wine production) consumption on gut and cardiovascular health in postmenopausal women.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Women ages 45-70
  • Have obesity (BMI 31-49.9 kg/m2)
  • No history of diabetes or chronic disease
  • Postmenopausal, with no menses for at least two years
  • No prescription medication (except for those on a 6 month stable dose of medications for the thyroid)
  • Not taking any supplements
  • Willing to collect a stool sample at home, and provide a blood sample during study visits

Participants in our study will attend 4 visits at the Ragle Human Nutrition Research Center on the UC Davis campus. At the first, we will run through the vascular function measurement. The following three visits will occur immediately prior to beginning the Chardonnay Marc intake, after 6 weeks of intake, and then at the end of the 12-week intake period. For the first 6 weeks, participants will be asked to consume 1.5 g of Chardonnay Marc daily; this will increase to 4.5 g for the final 6 weeks, which must be consumed between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm. Prior to each visit, participants will be asked to limit their intake of certain foods, collect stool and urine samples, and fast for 8-12 hours. At the visits, which should last at most 2 hours, we will take a blood sample as well as measure blood pressure and vascular function.

Participants can receive compensation up to $340 for their time and effort.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
