Study Background
The INHALE (Individualized Nutrition to Help Asthmatics improve Lung function and Energetics) study
Could diet changes improve asthma control? For this study, we are looking for men with asthma to determine how much three distinct dietary approaches affect lung function.
Participants will test out 3 different diets for one week each. During this study, participants may also be asked to complete questionnaires and undergo blood, urine, asthma control and lung function assessments.

The INHALE (Individualized Nutrition to Help Asthmatics improve Lung function and Energetics) study aims to determine how much three distinct dietary approaches affect lung function.
You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Men aged 18-65 years old
- Diagnosed with asthma
- Stable asthma medication use (no change in the past 2 months)
- Willing to adhere to study diets throughout three, 7-day periods
- No strict dietary restrictions (ex. vegan, vegetarian)
- Have a BMI between 18.5-25 kg/m2
This study will last approximately 2 months, consisting of 5 in-person study visits. If you participate in this study, you will be asked to try 3 different diets for 7 days each with at least one week in between each diet.
In addition to trying each diet, you may also be asked to complete questionnaires and assessments including:
- Medical history
- Height and weight
- Vital signs (pulse and blood pressure)
- Fingerpick blood tests
- Blood draws
- Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
- Breath testing (Fractional exhaled nitric oxide; FENO)
- Lung function testing (spirometry)
- Diet monitoring and reporting
As a participant, you can receive up to $200 for your time and effort.
