Study Background

Help us learn more about navigating through opioid use recovery.

This study explores how individuals recovering from opioid use disorder (OUD) experience their recovery, particularly in relation to local recovery community centers. We invite participants who are currently receiving medication for OUD at a clinic near a community center. While using the center’s services is optional, we want to compare those who engage with the center to those who do not.

Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), our goal is to document how people navigate their recovery journeys with medication. By examining different outcomes based on community involvement, we aim to identify factors that lead to successful recovery, which could help improve future support systems for those dealing with OUD.

Additional Information

This study is being conducted to understand how individuals using medications for opioid use disorder navigate their recovery journeys, particularly in relation to their engagement with recovery community centers. Researchers aim to identify factors that influence successful recovery, which could inform future support systems and interventions.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18+ years of age
  • Currently taking medications for opioid use disorder
  • Have not attended a recovery community center in your area in the past 3 months

If you participate in this study, here’s what will happen:

  1. Duration: Your participation will last for one year.

  2. Assessments: You will complete assessments at five different times:

    • At the start of the study
    • 1 month after the start
    • 3 months after the start
    • 6 months after the start
    • 12 months after the start
  3. Compensation: You will be paid for each assessment you complete.

  4. Types of Assessments:

    • Online Survey: You will complete this at every assessment.
    • Timeline Follow Back Interview: This structured conversation with study staff will focus on your substance use and engagement with the recovery community center over the past 30 days, conducted at every assessment.
    • Saliva Tests: At enrollment, and again at 6 and 12 months, you will provide a saliva sample to check for recent use of specific substances (e.g., amphetamines, opioids, marijuana).
  5. Remote Participation: All procedures can be completed remotely, making it convenient for you.

  • You will be paid up to a total of $300.
  • For each online survey completed:
    • Receive $20 (unless you miss a check item, then receive $10).
  • For each Timeline Follow Back (TLFB) interview:
    • Receive $20.
  • For completing the saliva test:
    • Receive $15.
  • For the 12-month assessments:
    • Receive $40 for each online survey and TLFB interview.
    • Receive $30 for the saliva test.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
