Dementia Caregivers Research Study

Researchers at Emory University are conducting a study on individuals caring for older adults with memory problems to learn more about how multiple caregivers for the older adult work together.

Study Background

Informal Caregiving Networks of Older Adults with Dementia

Informal caregiving for people with memory problems who are living at home typically involves multiple caregivers. However, little is known about the full scope of caregiving experienced by the many family members and/or friends involved in caring for these individuals in the community.

For the first time, this research will aim to characterize informal caregiving networks of people with memory problems over time, as well as generate evidence on how the network characteristics affect both caregivers and people being cared for. Eventually, we hope that this research will help identify strategies for alleviating caregiver burden.

If you are the primary caregiver for an adult 65 or older with memory problems, such as dementia, you could be eligible to participate in this remote research study through phone surveys. Help advance caregiving research today.

Additional Information

This research will expand our understanding of informal caregiving (caring for someone at home as a non-professional caregiver, such as a family caregiver) beyond the role of the primary caregiver. The study will collect information about who, other than the primary caregiver, are involved in informal caregiving and how those multiple caregivers work together and co-manage caregiving over time.

You may be qualified for this study….

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18+ years old

  • Caring for someone age 65 or older

  • Primary caregiver

  • Able to communicate in English or Spanish

  • Not a professional paid caregiver (e.g., home health aids)

  • Older adult with dementia does not live in a nursing home or assisted living facility

You can complete the entire study from home over 2 years. Participation will involve telephone-based survey completion at enrollment, and then every 6 months for the next 2 years for a total of 5 surveys.

Your participation at each timepoint as described above will be compensated.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
