Researchers are conducting a study with individuals who smoke at least 10 cigarettes per day to learn more about tobacco/nicotine purchasing patterns. This is not a smoking cessation treatment study.

Study Background
Researchers at Virginia Tech and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center are examining how tobacco/nicotine purchase patterns may be affected by new tax proposals.
Through this study, we are investigating how price changes and different scenarios may have an impact on purchase patterns. We also hope to learn more about why individuals purchase certain products, which could help us understand specific harms associated with tobacco use.
This compensated study consists of 2 in-person visits, as well as a follow-up held via phone or Zoom.
This is not a smoking cessation treatment study.

The purpose of this research study is to better understand how price changes and different scenarios may impact tobacco/nicotine purchase patterns.
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 21+
- Smoke 10+ cigarettes a day
- Use other tobacco products less than weekly if applicable
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding
- Do not have plans to move out of the area in the next 2 weeks, as this is an in-person study
- Stable tobacco use patterns for at least 3 months
- No uncontrolled physical or mental health conditions
- Do not use smoking cessation medications (e.g., nicotine replacement, patches, gum)
- Do not have immediate plans to alter/quit using tobacco products in the next 30 days
This entire study will last approximately 1-2 weeks and will consist of 2 in-person study sessions, as well as a follow-up session held via phone or Zoom. Sessions 1 and 2 will each last about 1-2 hours, and the follow-up session will last about 45 minutes.
You may be asked to complete questionnaires and computerized tasks. These include measures of your smoking habits, preferences, and completion of a purchasing task of tobacco/nicotine products (in our virtual marketplace) under different situations.
Additionally, between sessions 1 and 2, you will be provided nicotine/tobacco products to sample at home.
As a participant, you can earn up to $110 for completing all study tasks.
