Study Background
Researchers at Cornell University are testing PhytoSERM as a potential alternative to estrogen replacement therapy for menopausal women.
PhytoSERM is a food supplement that contains phytoestrogens, which are plant compounds that can have similar effects to estrogen in the body. Through this research, we want to see if regular consumption of PhytoSERM can improve glucose brain metabolism and help address menopausal symptoms in women.
Participants in our study will be randomly selected to take a placebo or the active PhytoSERM capsule daily for a 24-week period. They will also be asked to complete FDG-PET and MRI scans, record the occurrence and severity of symptoms such as hot flashes, and wear a digital wristband that will track physiological metrics.

Additional Information
In this study, we are testing the effects of the food supplement PhytoSERM on glucose brain metabolism and menopausal symptoms in women. We hope that PhytoSERM may present a potential alternative to estrogen replacement therapy for menopausal women.
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Women ages 45-60
- Currently experiencing or have experienced menopause
- Have 5+ hot flashes per day
- Not taking estrogen or other therapies for menopause
- Normal mammogram in the past 2 years
- Able to undergo MRI scan (no metal in the body, no claustrophobia)
Participants in our study will attend 6 in-person visits, each approximately 6 weeks apart. These visits will take place at Weill Cornell’s Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinical Trials Unit in New York City. The treatment period will be 24 weeks long; during this time, participants will take a daily dose of either a placebo or the active PhytoSERM capsule. Both before and after the treatment period, participants will undergo an FDG-PET scan and an MRI scan. Visits will also include memory tests, clinical assessments and questionnaires, and blood sample collection. Additionally, participants will be asked to record the occurrence and severity of symptoms (such as hot flashes), as well as wear a digital wristband that tracks physiological metrics.
Participants can earn up to $850 for their time and effort. This includes $100 per PET scan, $75 per MRI scan, $500 per pharmacokinetic study (first 12 volunteers only), and $100 upon study completion. Additionally, we will offer $75 per visit to assist with transportation costs.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
