Additional Information
The Healthy Mamas study is being conducted to assess the health effects of a weight maintenance program aimed at promoting fat loss during pregnancy for women with higher BMIs (31-55). By studying how structured lifestyle interventions, including healthy eating habits and regular monitoring, impact weight and overall health during pregnancy, researchers hope to identify practices that support healthier pregnancies and reduce potential health risks for both mothers and their babies.
You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
Ages 18-45
Less than 15 weeks pregnant
Higher weight status (have a BMI > 31)
Expecting a single baby (not twins or triplets)
No major health issues (ex. history of preeclampsia, diabetes, thyroid disease)
The Healthy Mamas study lasts approximately 8 months, covering most of your pregnancy and including a follow-up assessment two weeks postpartum.
If you participate in the Healthy Mamas study, you’ll be randomly assigned to one of two groups. Both groups will receive standard prenatal care, but each will have different additional activities:
Provider-Directed Group: You’ll attend one session with a study counselor, in addition to your regular prenatal care.
Weight Maintenance Group: You’ll follow a structured lifestyle program designed to help maintain weight during pregnancy. This includes receiving meals and snacks provided by the study, attending regular counseling sessions with a study counselor, and following specific guidelines to support healthy habits throughout your pregnancy.
For all participants, the study provides monthly ultrasounds and regular health assessments to monitor changes in weight, diet, activity levels, and overall health. You’ll also have a follow-up assessment two weeks after giving birth.
As a participant, you can receive up to $525.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
