The Ohio Study, conducted by researchers at The Ohio State University, investigates how teens’ daily activities, relationships, and social media habits influence their mental and physical health. By participating, your family will contribute to innovative research that aims to shape the future of adolescent health. This unique study involves home visits where an interviewer will ask questions about life experiences, friends, and family, as well as collect hair and blood samples to measure stress and immune function. Participants will also complete short daily surveys, wear a heart-monitoring watch, and use a phone app that tracks app usage and typed words. Together, these insights will help uncover the connections between daily life and overall well-being in teens.

Additional Information

Researchers aim to better understand how teens’ daily lives, social media use, and relationships impact their mental and physical health. The findings could help improve health outcomes for future generations.

You or your child may qualify for a study if you/they meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Are between the ages of 13 and 17

  • Have used TikTok, Snapchat, or Instagram in the last month

  • Identify as either White or African American/Black

If your child qualifies, an interviewer will visit your home several times to ask questions about their life experiences, friends, and family. They will also collect blood and hair samples, measure heart activity, and set up an app on your child’s phone to track social media usage. Your child will also complete short surveys on their phone throughout the study.

Your family could earn up to $585 in cash or checks for participating.

Compensation includes payments for interviews, surveys, and other study activities. Payments are considered taxable income.
