Study Background
Coming out can come with complicated feelings – both for you, and for the people who love you. This online program aims to help.
The Family Acceptance Program-Online (FAP-O) is a 9-week long online group program for LGBTQ+ youth of color (ages 14-20) and their parents or caregivers. The program uses a culture-based family support framework that enables parents and caregivers to reduce rejecting behaviors that contribute to health risks and increase supportive behaviors that promote well-being for LGBTQ+ youth. If you are an LGBTQ+ teen seeking better support from your parent or caregiver around your identity, or if you’re a parent or caregiver struggling with your child’s identity, you could be a perfect fit for this research study.
We hope that eventually, the findings of this study might be useful to help parents and caregivers learn skills to support their LGBTQ+ youth’s health and well-being, and to strengthen families like yours.

Additional Information
The goal of this online program is to help parents and caregivers learn skills to support their youth’s health and well-being and strengthen their family.
You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Person of color ages 14-20
- Identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community
- Desire for greater support from a parent or caregiver regarding LGBTQ+ identity
OR:
- Parent or caregiver of a youth who meets these criteria
Parents/caregivers will be asked to attend nine virtual weekly 2-hour program sessions and youth will be asked to attend six 1.5-hour program sessions and two 2-hour program sessions.
Two of the sessions youth and caregivers are asked to attend are “shared” sessions in which youth/caregivers all come together for the session. Other sessions are with only other caregivers or youth.
After each session, participants are asked to take a short 5-minute survey. Participants are also asked to complete 3 other longer surveys; one as soon as they enroll, one about 3 months later, and one 6 months after that.
This study is part of a clinical trial, which means that some youth and caregivers will attend program sessions starting around March, and others will attend starting in late 2025 or early 2026. Participants have a 50/50 chance of either starting the program soon or in about a year.
Some participants will also be randomly selected to complete an exit interview depending on if they attend the majority of the program sessions.
Participants are paid $20 for each post-session survey they complete, $15 for the pre-test survey, $20 for the immediate post-test survey, $20 for the 6-month follow-up survey, and $25 for the exit interview. In total, youth can earn up to $240 and caregivers can earn up to $260.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
