Study Background

Atrium Health and Wake Forest University School of Medicine are evaluating the ways to increase accessibility to behavioral health for all, and improve their quality of life through innovative research.

Smoking tobacco shortens the lifespan of adults struggling with mental illness by 25 years and contributes to $317 billion in expenditures in healthcare. Determining whether it is possible to deliver more effective and wider-reaching smoking interventions for individuals who struggle with mental illness is a high priority for our research team.

We are comparing two approaches to help people with mental illness(es) who want to quit smoking. Our study will test the effectiveness of an app in combination with nicotine replacement therapy (nicotine patches and gum).
