Study Background
Join a study that may improve your family’s health!
Our multicultural team, led by Dra. Sara Mijares St. George, created an app called “Healthy Juntos” to promote a healthy weight, and improve physical activity, nutrition, and family relationships in Hispanic families with adolescents. This study aims to find out if the app is effective at improving health for its intended audience.
Participation in the study involves completing surveys; getting your height, weight, and body composition measurements; getting your physical activity level and quality of diet measurements; and potentially using the app.
If you are the parent of a child ages 11-15 and you identify as Hispanic, your family may be eligible to participate in this compensated study. Help us find ways to improve the health of families like yours!

Additional Information
This study aims to see how well a family-based digital program called Healthy Juntos (Together) helps Hispanic teens stay at a healthy weight. The program, available on the web and mobile phones, encourages better eating habits, more physical activity, and a healthier body composition.
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Child is 11-15 years old
- Both parent and child identify as Hispanic
- Both parent and child own a smartphone with internet access
Participation in this study lasts 12 months. It includes 4 in-person visits (at the beginning of the study, after 3 months, after 6 months, and after 12 months), where you will need to complete the following:
- Surveys
- Body measurements (height, weight, body composition, and waist circumference)
- Wear a physical activity monitor for 7 days
- Respond to a diet evaluation
Then, you will be randomly assigned to one of two groups, like flipping a coin.
- If assigned to the intervention, you will use the online program for 6 months (use time of 45 minutes per week on average), attend 11 coaching sessions via Zoom, wear a Fitbit device, and keep it after the study is finalized.
- If assigned to the control group, you’ll access the apps and online resources provided as tools to improve your family’s health behaviors.
Families may receive a total compensation of up to $230 for parents and $90 for adolescents.
Families assigned to the Healthy Juntos app (about half of participants, assigned randomly) will use and keep two Fitbit Inspire devices (valued at $80 each).
There is no cost for your family to participate in our research study.
