Study Background
Researchers at the University of Utah want to learn more about tobacco cessation among people who use both cigarettes and marijuana.
The purpose of this study is to understand how using both marijuana and cigarettes may impact attempts to quit smoking cigarettes.
During this 10-day study, participants will wear a heart rate monitor and answer questions about daily experiences. There will also be 2 virtual study visits. Help contribute to research by being a part of this compensated study!

Additional Information
The goal of the study is to understand how everyday experiences and marijuana use may impact attempts to quit smoking cigarettes.
You may qualify if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 18+
- Currently use cigarettes daily
- Currently use marijuana at least 2 days per week
- Motivated to quit smoking cigarettes
- Own a smartphone
- Speak English
- Able to use nicotine patch and gum
- Not currently using tobacco cessation treatments or nicotine replacement therapy such as patch or gum
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding
During this 10-day study, participants will wear a heart rate monitor and answer questions about daily experiences on their smartphone. There will also be 2 virtual study visits.
In the first visit, participants will answer questionnaires, be trained on use of the study equipment (a smartphone app and heart rate monitor), and will receive tobacco cessation counseling and nicotine replacement therapy.
In the second visit, participants will receive a short counseling sessions, answer a questionnaire, and will be compensated.
As a participant, you can receive up to $150 in gift cards for your time and effort.
You will receive $50 for each study visit, and $1 for each smartphone question (up to $50).
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
