Study Background
This study aims to design tools, trainings, and digital interventions that support early identification of mental health concerns in young children. Participants will help shape how pediatric clinicians address mental health earlier in a child’s development.
The Mental Health, Earlier Center at Northwestern University is leading an innovative research effort to improve how we recognize and support mental health in young children. By collaborating with pediatric clinicians through in-depth, human-centered design interviews, the research team seeks to co-create meaningful solutions grounded in lived experience and clinical insight.
The findings from these interviews will directly inform the development of a pediatric mental health risk calculator, a training program for clinicians to better discuss mental health with families, and tools that promote caregiver involvement in digital mental health programs. With a strong focus on practical application in primary care settings, this study seeks to make early mental health conversations easier and more effective—especially for families with children under age five.
