Study Background

Personalized Interventions and Outcomes: Navigating Eating Disorder Experiences and Recovery (PIONEER) Study

Eating disorders are complex illnesses, and current treatments often follow a one-size-fits-all approach that doesn’t work for everyone. The PIONEER study, led by Dr. Cheri Levinson at the University of Louisville, is working to change that by developing personalized treatments tailored to each individual’s unique needs and experiences.

Sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), PIONEER is conducted entirely online, making it easy for people to participate from anywhere in the US. The study also explores how factors like overall health, medical conditions, and social challenges may influence treatment and recovery, helping researchers better understand what works best for whom.

Additional Information

This study aims to improve eating disorder treatment by developing personalized treatment plans that may be more effective than the current one-size-fits-all approach. By understanding how health, medical, and social factors impact recovery, researchers hope to create treatments that are better tailored to each individual’s needs, leading to better outcomes for both individuals and communities.

If you choose to participate in the PIONEER study, everything will take place online. All participants will complete app-based surveys for 15 days and take part in phone screenings and questionnaires before, during, and after the study period. Some participants will be selected for Phase II, which includes 13 virtual sessions of either Personalized Treatment for Eating Disorders or Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with a trained clinician. The study does require a time commitment, so please consider your availability before enrolling. Your involvement will help advance more effective, personalized treatments for eating disorders.

You can earn up to $525 for completing all parts of this virtual study. Payment depends on which parts you complete. Phase I participants can receive up to $310, or up to $150 if they continue into Phase II. Those in Phase II can earn an additional $375. Plus, participants in Phase II will receive up to 13 free sessions of eating disorder treatment.
