Study Background

Enhancing Smoking Cessation for African American People Everywhere (ESCAPE)

Researchers at the University of Houston are conducting a study called ESCAPE – Enhancing Smoking Cessation for African American People Everywhere. This study is designed to help Black/African American individuals who smoke and are living with HIV. The goal is to test a new mobile health (mHealth) program that supports both quitting smoking and managing HIV. The study is completely remote and only requires a single 2-hour Zoom appointment. During that time, participants will review materials created to support quitting smoking and share their feedback.

This research is especially important because African American communities are often affected by higher rates of health problems, including HIV and smoking-related illnesses. By focusing on tools specifically made for these communities, the study hopes to reduce health disparities and improve long-term outcomes. As a thank you, participants will receive a $100 Tango e-gift card after completing the session, which can be used at a variety of stores.
