Study Background

This study is testing a behavioral program to help teens ages 14-18 quit vaping and nicotine pouches.

Vaping is becoming more and more popular, and once you start, it can be hard to stop. We know that vaping carries a lot of health risks for teenagers, but there aren’t a lot of proven treatments available for teens who want to quit.

The goal of this research study is to test a behavioral program designed for teens who want to quite or reduce their nicotine use. We want to find out how well it works, and we need help from teens like you all over the USA. If you’re 14-18 years old and willing to try quitting vaping and nicotine pouches, you could be a valuable part of this research.

Additional Information

The study is being done to test whether a behavioral program helps teenagers quit using nicotine vapes and pouches more effectively than a text-based app alone. Vaping in teens is linked to addiction and serious health risks, and there are currently few proven treatments for teens who want to quit. By developing effective interventions, the study aims to reduce vaping-related health problems in this vulnerable age group.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 14-18 years old
  • Vape nicotine or use nicotine pouches at least weekly
  • Willing to try to quit or reduce vaping in the next 30 days
  • No regular use of smoked tobacco (less than 5 days per week)
  • Able to understand and read English
  • If under 18, able to obtain parental permission to participate
  • Able to commit to 19 visits in 36 weeks

The study will last about 36 weeks, including a 12-week active treatment period and monthly follow-up visits afterward. All parts of the study have the option to be done virtually.

Enrollment

If you enroll in this study, you will first complete an enrollment visit where you provide consent (or assent), confirm your eligibility, and complete health and vaping assessments.

Treatment

Once enrolled, you will be randomly assigned to one of two groups.

  1. One group will receive 12 weekly behavioral support sessions plus a text-based quitting app.
  2. The other group will receive just the text-based app.

Weekly visits — which include assessments and, for some, behavioral counseling — can be done virtually via secure video calls or in person.

Follow-Up

After the initial 12-week treatment phase, you will have follow-up visits once a month (every four weeks) up to week 36 to monitor your progress and whether you are vaping. During these visits, you will also complete saliva tests to verify nicotine use. If the visits are virtual, you will receive clear instructions and support for the tests.

As a participant, you may receive up to $880 for completing the entire study.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
