Study Background

This study is designed to explore how pharmacies can play a stronger role in expanding access to HIV prevention.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective medication that helps prevent HIV infection. California Senate Bill 159 allows trained pharmacists to prescribe PrEP directly in community pharmacy settings, but adoption has been limited. Many pharmacies face challenges such as limited staff, time, and resources to fully implement this service.

By gathering insights from patients taking PrEP and pharmacists providing care, researchers at Chapman University aim to identify real-world barriers and facilitators to pharmacy-based PrEP. The findings from this study will help inform strategies to expand PrEP delivery in community settings and improve access to HIV prevention care.
