Study Background

Help Yale researchers by sampling different coolants in e-cigarettes.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of different cooling flavors in nicotine e-cigarettes, including effects such as how much people like/dislike different cooling flavors, how they make people feel, and their sensory effects. We are recruiting adults who use e-cigarettes regularly and are in generally good health.

The study includes a 2-hour intake visit to determine if you are eligible for the study and three lab sessions to test different e-liquids. Each lab session is about 4-5 hours in length, and participants will sample six nicotine containing e-liquids at each session that contain various flavors that can produce cooling. During each lab session, we collect questionnaires and assessments, saliva samples, and other biophysical samples such as blood pressure, heart rate, and pulse oximetry. Participants will also be invited to complete a study follow-up call at 1 and 6 months following participation.

Additional Information

The goal of this study is to examine the appeal and addiction potential of nicotine-containing e-cigarettes that have different types of coolants, both alone and available in combination with each other.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Use e-cigarettes regularly
  • Not trying to quit nicotine use
  • Ages 18+
  • Not pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Medically stable
  • Able to read and write
  • No known allergies to e-liquid ingredients

All visits will be in person and located in the New Haven area.

Intake

All participants prior to enrollment must complete an in-person intake visit. The intake visit includes collection of a urine sample to test for illicit drug use, pregnancy, and verification of e-cigarette use. This visit also includes a review of your medical history, tobacco and nicotine use history, and other assessments of health and general wellness.

Lab Visits

If you are eligible, you will then be invited to participate in three laboratory visits. Visits are approximately 4-5 hours and involve vaping 6 different e-liquids which contain nicotine and may contain different types of coolants. At all lab sessions, we will collect measures of health. During each e-liquid exposure, participants will complete assessments on the e-liquid, give a saliva sample, and we will collect blood pressure and heart rate. Each exposure is separated by 30 minutes to allow nicotine and cooling effects to dissipate. Following all exposures in a lab session, participants will then be given 30 minutes to vape any of the tested e-liquids as they wish.

At completion of each lab session, participants will be paid in cash for their participation. Travel compensation ($10) or rideshare services will be provided if needed.

Follow Up

After completion of labs, participants will be asked to complete a paid 1 and 6 month follow-up phone call to assess general health and tobacco use.

As a participant, you may receive up to $510 for completing the entire study.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
