Study Background
This study explores how the places people go every day may affect their success in quitting smoking.
Project DEDUCE is a nationwide virtual research study led by Joe McClernon, PhD, at Duke University. The study uses smartphone-based surveys and photos to understand how real-world environments influence smoking behavior and quit attempts. By learning more about how surroundings impact cravings and relapse, researchers hope to develop more effective quit-support tools in the future.
Participants will complete brief smartphone activities for two weeks before quitting, use a free nicotine patch as part of their quit attempt, and continue completing surveys every other day for one month. All study visits are fully remote, and additional virtual follow-up sessions occur at 3 and 6 months after quitting.
