Additional Information

This study is being done to see whether a digital, family-based program can help teens and parents improve sun safety behaviors and reduce skin cancer risk.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Teens ages 13-17 and their parent
  • Teen experienced a sunburn or indoor tanned in the last year or has suboptimal sun protection
  • No history of skin cancer
  • Teen and Parent/Guardian live together at least half the time in the US
  • Teen has access to a smartphone
  • Parent has a Facebook account and is willing to use Facebook daily
  • Must speak and read English
  • No severe medical condition that prevents participation

If you and your teen or parent choose to participate:

  1. Screening & Enrollment:
A parent and teen will complete an initial screening, followed by a phone call to confirm eligibility. Eligible participants will provide consent (parents) and assent (teens).

  2. Digital Program (12 weeks):

    • Teens receive short sun safety and health messages via text messages (MMS) on their smartphones.

    • Parents receive sun safety and teen health messages through a private Facebook group.

    • Messages are sent about twice daily for 12 weeks.

  3. Study Assessments:
Assessments occur at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months and include:

    • Online surveys (parents and teens)

    • A very brief digital diary (daily for one week) about sun exposure (parents and teens)

    • watch-like UV sensor worn by teens for a week at baseline and 6 months

All study activities are completed remotely, and participation lasts about 6 months total.

Participants receive electronic gift cards for completing study activities.

Parents and teens can earn up to $150 each for completing all surveys and diaries over the six-month study period. Teens can earn an additional $45 for wearing and returning the UV exposure monitors. No transportation is needed since all study visits are virtual.

There is no extra cost to participate in our research study above what you usually pay for your phone/text message plan.
