Experiencing Symptoms of Depression

Ages 18-65

Compensation
Up to $480

Conducted in
Stony Brook, NY
Study Background
Treating depression through the use of alternative medications or therapy
The Department of Psychiatry at Stony Brook University is one of the region’s premier providers of psychiatric services and a national leader in neuroimaging research. This research study aims to discover whether alternative medications or therapy could be effective to treat depression or sleep disturbances, especially after other treatments have failed. The study involves Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) imaging of the brain. PET and MRI imaging is performed before and after the treatment period.
If you are 18-65 and currently experiencing a major depressive episode, you could be eligible for this reserach study. Your participation may help further our understanding of depression and other psychiatric illnesses.

Additional Information
According to the World Health Organization, depression will be the second leading cause of disability this year. Depression is a common, painful and debilitating disorder. We hope that the results of this study will lead to more treatment options for people struggling with depression.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- 18-65 years old
- Currently experiencing a major depressive episode
- Not currently taking psychiatric medications (ex. anti-depressants) or willing to come off
- Able to undergo an MRI (no severe claustrophobia or non-removable metal on or in body)
Exclusion Criteria:
- Currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to conceive in the next 6 months
- Significant active physical illness or neurological deficit that may affect brain function or imaging
The study involves Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) imaging of the brain, as well as a medication or therapy. The medication/therapy may be effective to treat depression, especially if other treatments have failed.
If you are eligible and choose to participate in the study, you will complete:
- PET and MRI brain imaging before starting treatment
- 1-9 weeks of treatment
- Free clinician appointments during treatment
- Interviews about your physical and emotional health throughout the study
- PET and MRI brain imaging after the treatment is over
As a participant, you will be compensated up to $480 for your time and effort.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
