Remote Healthy Volunteer Research Study

Researchers at the University of South Florida are conducting a remote study in healthy young adults to better understand thinking and memory abilities.

Fast Facts

Healthy young adults ages 18-30

No history of cancer

Conducted remotely

Study Background

USF is running a remote study on thinking and memory in healthy young adults.

Thinking and memory abilities, which involve attention, problem-solving, and day-to-day cognitive performance, can vary between individuals and may be influenced by lifestyle, activity, or past experiences. We aim to learn more about how thinking and memory function in healthy young adults and how to measure these abilities accurately using remote tools like apps and wearable devices.

Eventually, the findings of this study might be useful for understanding cognitive functioning and improving tools to support brain health.

Additional Information

In this research study, we are trying to understand thinking and memory abilities in young adults. We aim to learn how attention, problem-solving, and daily cognitive performance can differ between healthy individuals. These abilities can be influenced by factors such as activity levels, sleep patterns, and everyday experiences, and we will measure all of these to gain a more complete understanding of cognitive function.

Eventually, the findings of this study might be useful for improving ways to assess cognitive function in young adults and for developing tools to support healthy brain development and overall cognitive well-being.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Healthy young adults
  • Ages 18-30
  • Able to read and speak English

Exclusion Criteria:

  • History of cancer
  • History of brain injury or stroke
  • Currently pregnant

The entire study lasts about 2 weeks. Once enrolled, the study involves:

From home: You’ll complete app-based activities and surveys to measure your thinking and memory abilities. The app will send notifications up to 5 times per day, and each survey or brain game will take just a few minutes to complete.

Using a wearable device: You’ll wear a Fitbit watch on your wrist to track your physical activity and sleep throughout the study.

Introduction & setup: We will schedule a virtual meeting to guide you through downloading and using the app and setting up the Fitbit. You’ll also complete a short welcome survey about your background, medications, and health history.

Trial & assessment period: You’ll have a 2-day trial period to get used to the app and Fitbit, followed by up to 8 days of assessment where the app will continue sending notifications and you’ll continue wearing the Fitbit. After the assessment period, you will complete an online survey and final cognitive tasks to finish the study.

As a participant, you can receive up to $100 for completing all study activities.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
