Crohn's Disease Research Study

Researchers at the University of Michigan are conducting a study on a low-sulfur diet for people with controlled Crohn’s disease who continue to experience abdominal pain or discomfort.

Study Background

Persistent abdominal pain or discomfort in Crohn’s disease may be driven by gut bacteria that produce hydrogen sulfide even when inflammation is under control.

Many people with Crohn’s disease continue to experience abdominal pain and diarrhea even when their disease is considered controlled, meaning there is no active inflammation. Currently there are no treatments available for these patients. We are studying if a new diet will work to improve abdominal pain or discomfort.

Additional Information

We are studying whether reducing dietary sulfur intake can improve persistent gastrointestinal symptoms.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Have Crohn’s disease that is under control
  • No changes in Crohn’s medications within the past 4 weeks
  • Not using antibiotics or probiotics within the past 4 weeks
  • Have at least mild to moderate abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Not currently on a vegan diet

If you are eligible and choose to participate, the study involves:

  • A phone screening to determine eligibility.

  • Participants are randomly assigned to either a low sulfur diet group or to continue their usual diet for 8 weeks.

  • After 8 weeks, the patients on the usual diet will be offered the low-sulfur diet.

  • Those assigned to the low sulfur group will receive guidance from the study team.

  • In-person visits occur at baseline (Week 0) and Week 8. Participants who begin in the usual diet group may return for a Week 16 visit if they choose to switch to the low sulfur diet.

As a participant, you may receive up to $800 for completing this 8-week dietary study.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
