Study Background

Help us compare the brains of people with and without cocaine dependence.

We are seeking participants for a research study to examine a brain chemical called acetylcholine. This is a neurotransmitter that carries messages from the brain to the body, playing a role in memory, learning, attention, involuntary muscle movement, and more. We want to find out how acetylcholine relates to the way the brain processes information in people with a cocaine addiction.

Currently, we are seeking participants who smoke cigarettes and do not use cocaine. These participants will be part of the control group. We are planning to compare the brain images of people who use cocaine with those of the control group. The insights we gain from this research study could improve our understanding of cocaine addiction, which may eventually contribute to finding better treatments. Join our research effort today.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to examine the brain chemical acetylcholine and how it relates to the way the brain processes information in people with a cocaine addiction.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Use nicotine (e.g., cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, gum)
  • No significant medical psychiatric disorder or medical condition
  • No current or past use of cocaine
  • No substances use disorder other than nicotine

All study procedures are in person. Study procedures will include interviews and a medical exam to determine if you are eligible for this study. If you are eligible, you will be asked to complete brief surveys, computer tests of cognitive ability, and brain scans: a positron emission tomography (PET) scan and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.

As a participant, you may receive up to $530 for completing the entire study.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
