Research Study

Researchers at West Virginia University are conducting the CLARITY study to understand reasons for smoking differed flavored cigarillos. This study is funded by the National Institutes of Health. This research aims to examine smoking behaviors, user experiences, and attitudes toward different products to help inform future public health efforts.

Additional Information

This study is being conducted to better understand how flavored little cigars and cigarillos are used, and how they influence smoking behavior, perceptions, and experiences.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 21-24
  • Smoke cigarillos or little cigars
  • Not currently interested in reducing tobacco use
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Willing to abstain from nicotine/tobacco products for at least 12 hours prior to laboratory sessions

 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Medical condition that would interfere with participation
  • Unable to read English at an 8th grade level

If you are eligible and choose to participate, you will:

  • Complete a phone screening to determine eligibility
  • Attend 1 in-person baseline visit (about 1 hour)
  • Attend 5 additional in-person lab visits (about 1–2 hours each)
  • During study visits, smoke a cigarillo using a research device that measures smoking behavior
  • Complete surveys and computerized research tasks at each visit

All study visits take place at a research facility on the WVU campus.

Participants may receive compensation for their time and effort. Travel support is also available for certain study visits.
